The NORAD Tracks Santa app

It’s countdown time! Watch Santa as he prepares for flight on Christmas Eve. You can explore the North Pole and play games that help the Elves get the presents ready too.  Apple and Android. Mixed reviews – most agree that the app is not as good as the NORAD Tracks Santa website.

This app lets you follow Santa around the globe, pinpointing him on the map as he goes. The app will also add your location, and give a countdown so you know exactly what time Santa will be arriving.  Apple and Android. Reviews think it is a fun app to use because you get a different update about what Santa is doing each time you refresh the radar.

Santa Tracker Lite logoSanta Tracker Lite

Not to be confused with the previous app! This one lets you zoom in and out of earth while you track St Nick, and take the sleigh for a test run to see how fast it can go. Comes with a selection of carols for added holiday charm and of course a countdown to the big day. Apple and Android. Reviews are few, but seems that most are content with this simple Santa app.

See what Santa is up to on the run up to Christmas, send a letter to Santa while you are waiting and track Santa once he is on his way. There is also a blog and Advent Calendar of Santa sightings. Android. With only a handful of reviews, it is difficult to say if this app is worth the £1.55 to download.

10 Quick Tips For Stress-Free Festive Travel

It’s that time of year again! Whatever your plans, mode of travel, or reasons for journeying, the chances are it is going to be a little stressful. Here are some Zen-inspired tips for beating the stress of travelling at Christmas.

A Very Merry Warmy Christmas by Suus Wansink

A Very Merry Warmy Christmas by Suus Wansink CC BY 2.0

  1. Breathe! Take a breath in for the count of three, and out for the count of six. Repeat until calmness is restored.
  2. Make a list. Keeping an itinerary in your head will make your journey feel more hectic.
  3. Pack the day before. Leaving it until the last minute is no way to maintain a state of Zen.
  4. Check for delays. If you find out there are delays, pack something to keep you occupied while you wait.
  5. Charge your batteries. Leaving home with a phone that is about to die will not make your life easier.
  6. Pack a power pack. Just in case you leave the house without enough juice.
  7. Check your passport NOW. Last minute replacements are costly, and stressful!
  8. Take a snack. Hangry is a not a great attitude to pack on a long journey.
  9. Wear comfy clothes. Think soft, think layers, think stretchy and you can’t go far wrong.
  10. Take loose change. In the right currencies! That means packing Euros/Dollars/Yen etc… and GBP, so you aren’t left strapped for cash at either end of your journey. A cuppa may be cheap, but if you don’t have the change, your route to travel bliss could be well and truly blocked.

England’s tour of South Africa takes the Cricket team to Durban for what promises to be a hot and humid Christmas! With the 1st Test, which takes place at Kingsmead Stadium, running from Boxing Day to the 30th December we thought we’d share insider ideas for passing time in this part of the world.

 The Beach

For Brits, heading to the beach on Christmas Day is sure to be a surreal experience, more so if you head to a Durban beach as it gets packed with locals during this holiday period. Those in the know suggest avoiding the beaches altogether, but we guess it is horses for courses, and maybe you might enjoy that kinda thing.

The Food

Most places are closed on Christmas Day, but you can still find a few choice eateries open. The Rainbow Terrace Hilton Restaurant, Cosmopolitan Restaurant and The Oyster Box are all top choices – to discover more about menus and what is available where visit The Durban Food Blog. However you may find places have been booked up way in advance, in which case speak with your accommodation provider who may be able to help you find something less well known, or they may even extend an invite to their own festive celebrations.

The Activities

  • Whale and dolphin watching from Wilson’s Wharf
  • Catamaran trip
  • Scuba diving at the Aliwal Shoal – about an hour drive from Durban
  • Tala Game Reserve – about a half hour drive inland

The Match

Kingsmead Stadium in Durban is home to the Boxing Day test match whenever the Test Series is played in South Africa. In 2015 it runs from Saturday 26th to Wednesday 30th December before cricketing fun moves on to Cape Town. England fans will no doubt have all their fingers crossed as England were beaten 2-0 at home when the two countries last met in a Test series in 2012. For more information about what to expect visit the EBC website.

Don’t forget your travel insurance!

Whether this is the only trip you’ll make all year, one of many, or you plan to visit Durban while you are already travelling – we have a great value comprehensive travel insurance option for you. Visit WorldwideInsure.com to find out more.

Homes by Tinybop App Review – Kids Travel App of The Month Nov15

If you hope to inspire your little ones with your own globetrotting antics, it is good to get them to understand that cultural differences exist and expand their knowledge of language. We have found a travel app aimed at children 4 and over that is simple, fun and promises to broaden their horizons.

tinybop logo

What is Homes by Tinybop?
It is an app that allows children to explore four very different locations and discover the homes, climate, culture, language and geography of that area. The way the “game” works is great too. There are no rules or levels, instead curiosity is rewarded with more interactive animations.

Here’s what Homes offers:

• Twenty rooms in four interactive homes to explore: a brownstone in Brooklyn, a ger in Mongolia, an adobe in Guatemala and a tower house in Yemen.
• Customise each home while you explore, and see yourself in the mirrors.
• Investigate the utilities of the property, its construction and surroundings.
• Learn about he foods, books, animals and decor peculiar to each dwelling and culture
• Learn words for over 50 languages while playing

tinybop screenshot

Homes by Tinybop is potentially just as appealing to curious adults as it is to children! It comes with a virtual handbook which provides information about each type of home and the location of the dwelling, and with the click of a button the items on screen can be changed to display words from 50+ languages.

Homes by Tinybop Reviews

Reviews of Homes by Tinybop hit the 5 star mark, as you can see below, but to get a closer look at what the app can do before you buy, check out the The Children’s Technology Review of the app on YouTube.

Love this simple, exploratory look at different cultures and ways of life around the world. Sparked a lot of great questions from my two little ones. So many fun little details. The call to prayer in the Yemen scene. Very cool. Bravo!

Top 5 Cities In The World For Skateboarding

If skateboarding is your passion, then you’d probably choose a holiday destination where your board will have a fun time too. We caught up with some people who live to skate to find out where in the world you should go with your skateboard… and why! Here’s our top 5.

By Evan Brant, from Grind For Life 2014 @ NSB Skatepark

By Evan Brant, from Grind For Life 2014 @ NSB Skatepark

5: Seoul, South Korea – Street skating is still quite novel here, and people are generally keen to watch boarders. Take to the streets in Seoul and you are likely to attract a crowd of curious onlookers rather than a mob of angry locals.

4: Barcelona… just because it looks like it would be awesome to skate, there are beautiful places suitable for skateboarding everywhere. After you’ve had your fill of tapas, check out Barcelona Skate Spots for info on where to skate in this beautiful beachside city. Alternatively, you could head to Amigos skate shop to get some insider knowledge!

SKATE Barcelona with Jesus Fernandez Pt. 1

3: New York City – There are plenty of skate parks, street spots, and all in all it is “pretty awesome” from a boarder’s point of view. Plus the big apple is synonymous with 24 hour fun, frivolity and well, lots of likeminded people. Check out NYSkateboarding.com to find out what’s on, when and where.

2: Dubai – There is a growing scene in Dubai, and because this prestigious destination is pretty much perfect everywhere, you are guaranteed a very smooth skating experience. We Are Blood, a film that celebrates the universal bond of skateboarding, shows it in its fullest glory. There may only be two skate shops in Dubai, but a visit to Rage is a must as it has a bowl above the shop. Apparently you’ll find it located in a mall by the Burj Khalifa. Also check out the Business Bay skate park. While the locals seem to accept skaters, it might be wise to stop when the Muslim call to prayer comes on, so as to not be intrusive with noise.

1: Tokyo – According to one skater who lives here there are more street spots than could possibly be mentioned, a fair amount of parks, and lots of really friendly local skaters. While he says that his local park isn’t what he’d call awesome, we think it looks pretty good, plus it has a great view of the Tokyo skyline, but the info that seals the deal for us is that fact there is a giant robot out the front. Check out H.L.N.A. Skatepark Vol.1 on Vimeo to see for yourself!

WorldwideInsure.com cover many sports and activities, some are included automatically within the Travel Insurance such as recreational skateboarding, others need to be added when you are buying your policy online, for example skateboarding with stunts or competitive skateboarding. Check out the comprehensive list of sports and activities covered under the wintersports policy.

Tennis Lovers Guide To Ghent, Belgium – Davis Cup Final 2015

Ghent by Mislav Marohnić 2012

Ghent by Mislav Marohnić 2012

Canals, historical architecture, quirky bars and an indoor clay court worthy of a tennis cup final. Welcome to Ghent in Belgium, the venue of choice for the 2015 Davis Cup final where Andy Murray hopes to lead Britain to victory!

If you are heading to this beautiful Belgian city to witness history in the making, you might like to know a thing or two about the city in which you are staying, for the times that you won’t be watching Andy in action.

Ghent at Night by Sandeep Pawar 2012

Ghent at Night by Sandeep Pawar 2012

Culture – Street art, and art in general is abundant in Ghent. There is an arts scene that permeates from the city centre to the harbour with arty shops and galleries in abundance. The music scene is also highly regarded out this way, with lots of clubs and bars to choose from playing an eclectic mix of sounds including jazz, funk, folk and electronica. Ghent is also well known for its many museums, so there is always something to do even if the weather is wet.

Quirky Bars – Believe it or not, Ghent is regarded as the vegetarian capital of Europe, so expect to find a diverse selection of veggie food options wherever you go. The selection of beverages on offer across the city is also diverse, and it has been said that if there is a drink you can’t find here, then it probably doesn’t exist!

Amazing architecture – The canal-side buildings are truly amazing, with much of the city’s medieval architecture remaining in tact. The great news is that you can enjoy the views in total safety as the centre of Ghent is in fact the largest car-free zone in Belgium. Perfect if you fancy take a long exposure snap or two on your travels!

Canals – One of the best ways to witness the amazing canal-side buildings is to take to the water. Canal cruises run several times and hour, and generally take around 40 minutes to an hour to complete an up-and-back route.

The Flanders Expo in Ghent will stage the 2015 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Final from 27 to 29 November. The match will take place in Hall 1, one of eight multi-use indoor clay arenas, which has a capacity of 13,000. To find out more about tickets, times and anything to do with the tennis visit DavisCup.com.  For information of the touristy variety turn your attention to the Ghent Tourist Website – a wealth of wonderful information!

Babymoon Travel Tips – Everything You Need To Know About Travelling When Pregnant

Babymoons are all the rage, the last chance to elope before you are at the beck and call of a demanding tiny person. The trouble is, you are hormonal, prone to a whole heap of not-so-nice pregnancy symptoms, and you want to make sure that you make the best choices for your baby in terms of where you go and when you travel. To help, we have gathered some essential tips to help you make a seemly simple decision easier at this special time.

Babymoon Travel Advice Image

Babymoon staycation. Taking it easy on the steep coastal path from East Lulworth to Durdle Door in Dorset, 28 weeks pregnant.

The best time to travel is between 4 and 6 months

This is because you are most likely over your initial nausea, and yet not so far along that you are uncomfortable, or could give birth at any minute. This applies to long distance car journeys, flying, travelling by boat, and by train.

Know your personal limits

If you are fit and healthy, and were pre-pregancy, the chances are you can take on a 5k hike at 28 weeks. The key is to take it easy – now is not the time to push yourself!

Opt for a staycation rather than a vacation

Knowing that you can reach an NHS hospital easily if you needed to offers a pregnant lady priceless peace of mind – no matter how many weeks gone you are! Plus, the point of a babymoon is about spending some undivided time together before baby is born, not necessarily about the holiday itself.

You can travel by ferry until you are 32 weeks pregnant, BUT..

Do check with the ferry company before booking as they may have their own restrictions in place.

Buckle up correctly

Never wear a safety belt over your bump, always have it under, and ensure the cross-strap is between your breasts. If you are the driver, make sure that you take regular breaks during the journey, and keep fresh air circulating.

You can now travel by air up until you are 37 weeks pregnant, BUT…

Not if you are carrying twins, in which case you must travel before 32 weeks, and if you are experiencing a high risk pregnancy, you should consult a medical professional first. As with ferry travel, check with the travel provider before booking as they may have their own restrictions or require a doctors note.

Flying is safe, but there are side-effects that may affect pregnant women

Changes in air pressure and humidity, along with the slight increase in radiation have been deemed unharmful, however, swelling in legs, motion sickness, and of course the risks associated with deep vein thrombosis are all worse in pregnancy.

Carry your handheld notes EVERYWHERE

Whether in the UK or abroad, having your notes in a bag that you are carrying is essential in case you go into labour prematurely or you are experiencing anything that you feel requires medical attention.

Avoid destinations where you would need vaccinations

Vaccinations are considered unsafe while pregnant as they may affect the baby in the womb. This may mean that some destinations are off the agenda – check with your local clinic before booking a holiday!

Avoid tummy troubles

Diarrhoea can lead to dehydration which is not good for an unborn baby. Make sure that food and drinks are “safe”, and if you do get an upset, seek medical help rather than buying over the counter treatments – these could be harmful to take during pregnancy.

Think about your comfort

Long journeys will need to be broken up for toilet breaks, leg stretching, bump swinging, eating and drinking. Plus, bear in mind that when you are heavily pregnant, staying in one position for any length of time is incredibly uncomfortable!

Get travel insurance and carry your EHIC card if you are travelling in Europe

The EHIC is a must, but bear in mind that it does not cover every eventuality – travel insurance is much more comprehensive, so needed even if you are staying within the EU. If you are going further afield, then you’d be incredibly foolish to travel without it!

WiFi Map Reviews

This app is well and truly a four-point-fiver, with many happy users on Android and Apple devices singing it’s praises. Not bad for a free app! Word of warning, the Pro version, which costs around $5 has a lot less favourable rating, and while the free app is free to download, there may be in-app purchases to access some passcodes.

Forget Halloween – Check Out These Top 10 Holiday Horrors!

Forget Halloween – Check Out These Top 10 Holiday Horrors!

Spooky Pumpkins by hjl 2013

We share the top 10 ways a holiday can go awry – and how WorldwideInsure.com can help.

  1. You are at the airport, your passport is on your kitchen table.
  2. You are not at the airport, you are stuck on the M25; your plane is leaving the airport.
  3. You arrive at your destination, your luggage arrives at a different destination, in a different timezone; possibly a different universe.
  4. You booked into a new five star resort, when you turn up you see clearly that you were looking at a concept drawing, once you’ve got past the cement mixers!
  5. You routinely apply your sunscreen only to find out that it is factor 2, AFTER you get third degree sunburn.
  6. You return to your hotel after a few too many Sambuccas, you wake up to find your passport gone, with vague memories of tossing it into the sea shouting “I never wanna leave this place, it’s beautiful!”
  7. You return to your hotel after a few too many Sambuccas, you wake up to find that you are in hospital after falling off your balcony.
  8. You stick to glasses of water, but didn’t check it was bottled water, you head to hospital with a very upset stomach.
  9. You hire a car on holiday and have a prang. Then you find out that your car hire excess is excessive and that you might have to sell your house to cover the bill.
  10. You wake up to find you have posted inappropriate pictures of yourself at a foam party on LinkedIn.

How WorldwideInsure.com can help

Missed flight – If you have missed a departure because a coach has broken down, we can help – however, if you’ve gone and left your passport on the table at home, you’ll be experiencing an expensive learning curve!
